Depression is classified as a mood disorder. It can also affect relationships and some chronic health conditions.These characteristics of severe depression, such as sadness or a persistent feeling of loss of interest, can lead to a number of practical and physical symptoms.

These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem.Depression may also be associated with suicidal ideation.Depression is an ongoing problem, not a passing one. It consists of episodes during which symptoms last for at least 2 weeks. Depression can last for several weeks, months, or even years.

Causes Of Depression

There are many possible causes of depression. They can range from biological to circumstantial.

  • Family history– If you have a family history of depression or any other mood disorder, youare at greater risk for developing depression.
  • Childhood trauma– Certain events in your childhood affect the way your body reacts to fear and stressful situations.
  • Structure of the brain – If your brain’s frontal lobe is less active, you are at greater risk for depression. However, scientists do not know whether this happens before or after the onset of depressive symptoms.
  • Medical conditions– Certain conditions can put you at higher risk of depression, such a schronic illness, insomnia, chronic pain, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
  • Drug use – A history of drug or alcohol abuse can affect your risk of depression.

Signs And Symptoms Of Depression

  • Unintentional weight loss or gain.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.

  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions.
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide or attempted suicide.

Types Of Depression

Depression can be broken down into categories based on the severity of symptoms. Some people experience mild and temporary episodes, while others experience severe and ongoing depressive episodes.

1). Major depressive disorder

This is a more severe form of depression. It is accompanied by persistent feelings ofsadness, hopelessness and worthlessness, which do not go away.

2). Persistent depressive disorder

This was called dysthymia. This is a mild, but chronic, form of depression.

Living with depression can be difficult, but treatment can improve your quality of life. Talk toyour doctor about possible options. You can recover with treatment.

1). Medications – You can overcome depression with the help of a doctor.Your doctor may prescribe antidepressant, antianxiety, antipsychotic medications.

2). Psychotherapy– Talking with a therapist can help you learn skills to deal with negative emotions.

3). Light therapy– Exposure to supplements of white light can help control your mood and improve symptoms of depression. Light therapy is commonly used in seasonal affective disorder, now called major depressive disorder with seasonal patterns.

  • Avoid thinking too much.
  • Spend time with friends, family.
  • Avoid loneliness.
  • Exercise.
  • Get out of the house.
  • Spend time in nature.
  • Stay away from toxic people.
